Words of Wisdom from my 84-Year Old Grandmother

From adventurous travels in the Airstream Club with my grandparents to heartfelt conversations and thoughtful advice, my 84-year-old grandmother, Arlene, has been an unwavering presence in my life. Her wisdom and compassion have guided me through both beautiful and joyous moments and challenging times.

In this week’s guest blog entry, I am excited to share six of her succinct yet profound answers to fundamental questions about life. Each response reflects a lifetime of experiences and lessons, offering insights that resonate universally, with a smidge of humour.

What are some of the most important lessons you've learned in your life?

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Give EVERYONE the benefit of the doubt.

Can you share some advice that has guided you through difficult times?

In the grand scheme of things, will this matter in 5 or 10 years?

If it’s something big, like loss, the truth is you’ll survive. One foot in front of the other and always know that something better is coming.

When things are tough, my mantra has always been it’s happening for a reason, whether it’s to teach me something or someone else, as we often share these lessons with others.

How do you define happiness, and what actions or attitudes have helped you find fulfillment?

Happiness is being at peace with what you have. It’s also remembering that everything you experience is a ‘lesson.’

In your opinion, what are the keys to maintaining meaningful relationships throughout life?

Always be kind (even those times you’d like to snarl at someone.)

What advice would you give to younger generations about living a fulfilling and purposeful life?

Always be kind — you never know what another is going through or why they are responding/acting like they are.

If you could do anything differently, what would that look like?

Going back is counterproductive and I choose to think ‘ahead.’

“A grandma is warm hugs and sweet memories. She remembers all of your accomplishments and forgets all of your mistakes." - Barbara Cage

May Arlene’s words inspire and resonate, reminding us of the enduring value of compassion, resilience, and purposeful living.
